Blood Draw Bottles – How are they Categorized?

I had my annual doctor’s check up recently, and they requested that I get a blood draw. The lady that took my blood used multiple bottles (seems like to me I got a full work up) and I was wondering what those bottles meant. How does isolating different parts of my blood check for liver and kidney function, when the doctors will be looking at my blood – and not the actual organs? How do doctors diagnose diseases/conditions based on my blood, and are there certain conditions that are more prevalent in mixed racial communities? Being mixed racial, I’d certainly … Continue reading Blood Draw Bottles – How are they Categorized?

Pericarditis and COVID – Another Possible Concern

During my research on myocarditis and its correlation to the COVID-19 vaccine and teens, I noticed that pericarditis was also on the CDC’s list of possible COVID-19 mRNA vaccine complications. Please feel free to read my previous blog post about myocarditis – but here, we’re going to jump into learning about what pericarditis is and danger signs to look out for that might tell you that you have it. Slight detour here – but I think it’s pretty fascinating that increased rates of myocarditis and pericarditis have only been found with mRNA vaccines. I wonder what the composition of the … Continue reading Pericarditis and COVID – Another Possible Concern

Myocarditis and COVID – What is it?

I got my second COVID vaccine a few weeks ago. I’m 15, so I received the vaccine approved for the 12-15 year age group: the Pfizer-Biotech Vaccine. But today I read a piece on the CDC website saying that increased rates of myocarditis have been appearing in teens who got the vaccine. While the CDC still recommends teens getting the vaccine, as the known benefits outweigh the potential and known risks, I wondered: what is myocarditis? And why is it that getting the vaccine increases the likelihood teens will develop this condition? So I decided I’d find out. Can’t hurt … Continue reading Myocarditis and COVID – What is it?

Starting Out: How Aware are Dogs? And Why Do We Care?

Today is the day my blog launches! Here, I’m hoping to create a space to share interesting information with other science lovers. My first post is going to be on a topic I’ve been wondering about for a while now…just how aware are dogs? My family got a Lhasa Apso puppy about one year ago in the middle of COVID’s first wave (July 2020). We named her Beyoncé, and she’s perfect. But sometimes I wonder…how much does she really know? Here’s a short video I found on the topic:  This video suggests that Jazz could only “tell time” through scent … Continue reading Starting Out: How Aware are Dogs? And Why Do We Care?
